What a website really costs:

Many customers call all excited because they need a website. Unfortunately, many people do not realize what it really means to have a website. After paying the initial cost of building the website, there will be ongoing costs that will need to be considered.

Domain Name:

A website requires a registered domain name. A domain will cost you around $10.00 per year. A domain name is your internet address. This is how people find you. A good domain name can make or break a website. If it’s too long, people will not remember it. Too vague will not identify what you are all about. Search engines also look at the name for keywords.

Web Hosting:

Web hosting is where your files are held. This can run between $3.99-$20.00 dollars per month. The cost depends on if you want to manage the web hosting yourself or have someone else manage it for you. Other factors like speed, file space needed, email accounts, and databases needed can raise prices as well. A quality host can make a big difference in your website speed and reliability.

Website maintenance:

Website maintenance is a critical part of your website’s health. Depending on how your site is built, you will have regular updates, image uploads, page alterations, and page content changes. There are very few sites that can be created and uploaded with no maintenance needed. To make these changes, you will need to learn how to manage your site or pay someone to service it. Most providers will offer monthly maintenance or per hour options. This can vary greatly, from $20.00 an hour and up. You will also need backups created of your site. If your site changes often, you may want daily or weekly backups. If your site is static and changes rarely, than monthly would work. Also something to consider- if someone hacks your site and it gets destroyed. How much business would you lose and what would it cost to rebuild? It could take weeks to rebuild a site from scratch again or a backed up site could be restored in hours or less at a fraction of the cost.

So when you’re ready to jump online and show your thoughts or product to the world, remember the initial cost of your website will not cover everything. Make sure you ask questions so in the end you do not end up with expenses you are not ready to account for.
